Helicopter Gunships Attack Old Fangak Killing 7.

On May 3, 2025, South Sudan military helicopter gunships dropped bombs and strafed the village of Old Fangak. One bomb destroyed the pharmacy operated by Medicine Sans Frontiers (MSF). Seven people were killed in the village and 20 injured. The bombing and attack caused severe damage to this vital healthcare facility in Old Fangak where Dr. Jill Seaman has been operating for over two decades.

The hospital, part of which was built by Alaska Health Project South Sudan in 2013, was one of the only functional health facilities in this region. It provided critical services including maternal and pediatric care for 25,000 women and children annually.

Bombs were also dropped on the village market and as the helicopters passed over head they strafed the TB center compound, market, and other sites along the river.

This heartbreaking attack caused nearly all the residents of Old Fangak to flee. The attack was blamed on the ongoing tribal disputes between the South Sudan government and regional militias.
